More than 300 students, alumni, employees and friends checked out Lakeland College's new Madison Center during a grand opening on Wednesday.

The newly-completed $2 million facility is located at 1650 Pankratz Street and was developed by Rifken Group, Ltd. Wednesday's event featured tours and a ribbon cutting.

The 15,000-square-foot facility includes 10 technology-rich classrooms and two computer labs including one laptop classroom; a large student lounge for students to study and work in groups and Wi-Fi throughout the building.

The college will use the center extensively for all its students, and reach out to community organizations and United Church of Christ congregations to encourage them to use the facility.

In 1978, Lakeland developed an evening degree-completion program for working adults, the first in the state at that time. Classes have been offered in Madison since 1979. This academic year, Lakeland is celebrating the 150th anniversary of the founding of its main campus, which is located in Sheboygan County.

Today, the college serves 500 students in the Madison area through its evening, weekend and online program, and 2,800 students statewide. The college's total enrollment is approximately 3,800.

Lakeland students in Madison can earn a bachelor of arts degree in business management, communication, marketing, computer science, accounting, healthcare management, hospitality management and specialized administration (available to students with associate degrees in approved technical fields). Lakeland also offers a master of business administration and a master of arts in counseling.

But Lakeland officials believe the newly-completed facility, which is located at 1650 Pankratz Street, positions the college better than ever to deliver academic programs and services to its students.

An open house at the $2 million center, which was developed by Rifken Group, Ltd., will be held Wednesday, Jan. 16, from 4-6 p.m., with a ribbon cutting at 5:30 p.m.

The classrooms are available for daytime rentals to businesses, clubs and other organizations.

"We're excited because we feel this new facility matches the high quality programming we have offered hundreds of students in the Madison area for over 30 years," said Jennifer Opperman, director of Lakeland's Madison Center.

"New classrooms allow us to offer all our students a rich academic experience. Lakeland has always been located on Madison's northeast side, but this new facility will give students better access. From work space to technology to ample free parking, we think our students are really going to be pleased with this facility."

Each seminar will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, with check in beginning at 9:30 am. Light refreshments will be provided.

These seminars will focus on the vision and mission of RTI and *PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Support) in Wisconsin both processes for achieving higher levels of academic and behavioral success for all students. Success for both processes lies within the classroom through collaboration. Implementation of a multi-level system of support includes meaningful family involvement, data-based decision making and effective leadership. Comprehensive RtI implementation will contribute to increased instructional quality, equitable access to high-quality and effective programming and will assist with the identification and support of learners with varied abilities and needs.

Seminar objectives include:

1. Acquire knowledge about the Mission and Vision of RTI and PBIS in Wisconsin Public Schools
2. Learn about current implementation practices of RTI and PBIS
3. Understand the important role school counselors play in successful implementation
4. Understand the cultural aspects of implementing RTI and PBIS
