Love What You Do

Hello everyone- Hopefully your Christmas breaks were refreshing. My husband and I spent our precious hours of free time researching a puppy that we hope to soon purchase. My husband likes to plan ahead and research everything to the tee. It is totally opposite of my character but I guess it is good for some things. I had no idea that for small dog breeds it can sometimes take up to 9 months to potty-train them. Isn’t that insane? We'll leave that subject up for next blog since we're starting to look at dogs tonight.
My title of this blog "Love What You Do" is a little plaque that is sitting on my desk which I received at a white elephant Christmas party and just put up this week when I returned back to work. I was dreading Tuesday because I had to start setting the alarm clock again and now have a routine back in my days, which is full of work. Well, this little plaque that I now have stares at me all day in bright bold letters reminding me of the fantastic job that I have. Before I started working for Lakeland in the admissions, I was a firm believer that people weren't supposed to like their jobs, that's why they called it work. It wasn't supposed to be fun, it just gave me my rent, food, and spending money. I criticized my husband who is a college basketball coach because he would happily go to his office and continue working long hours recruiting players and making phone calls and yet he was doing his hobby so he's always loved it. I now too share in his joy as I pursue my work here at Lakeland.
Because of this job I now have a different outlook on life and how you should face challenges. I will advocate for every potential and current college student to strive for the degree that is fun to you. Strive for the career that isn't going to just be prestigious or something worth bragging about because ultimately you will end up stuck in it the rest of your life and I can tell you those make for very long, sad days. I've worked in calling centers, and on campaign trails, where the only interaction I had with people was for them to scream foul words at me. I did it because I thought it sounded cool. A sure bet for you to start out in the right direction is for you to get out there and shadow people and love what you're studying in your classes. You aren't going to do good in it unless you enjoy doing it. It makes a world of a difference loving what you do.
My little "Love What You Do" plaque is a very important reminder for me that I do indeed love my job and I also have to go about doing my job like I love it. So if you get a phone call or email from me and I sound obnoxiously giddy it's because I am. There's no reason you can't be when you're in the 'real world' too.
