Lakeland College junior Leah Eisner (Stevens Point, Wis.) and senior Jake Schwarz (Sr.-Sheboygan, Wis.) both are recipients of Northern Athletics Conference Student-Athlete of the Week awards, continuing a string of weekly awards won by Muskie basketball players this season.
Eisner was named the conference's women's basketball player of the week, while Schwarz received the conference's men's basketball player of the week award. Both received the awards after leading their respective teams to undefeated records last week.
Eisner, a 6-1 center, received the honor after with three straight double-doubles over three Muskie wins. She finished with career highs of 22 points and 21 rebounds in a 75-68 overtime win over Maranatha Baptist Bible College on Thursday and also added 18 points and 11 rebounds in a Tuesday win over Alverno College and 13 points and 13 rebounds Saturday in a victory over Marian University.
Eisner averaged 17.7 points and 15 rebounds over the three games and also added three assists, four steals and three blocks on the week. She shot 42.6% from the field and 66.7% from the free throw line as Lakeland improved to 4-5 overall and 4-2 in the NAC.
For the season, Eisner is leading the Muskies in scoring (14.0 points per game) and blocks per game (1.0), and is also tied for the team lead in rebounds (8.4 per game). She is the first Muskie women's basketball player to win one of the NAC's weekly honors this season.
Schwarz continued the Lakeland men's basketball team's dominance of the conference's weekly award, making the Muskies 4-for-4 in winning the honor this season and receiving the award for the second time this season himself. The 6-5 forward averaged 21.5 points, 12.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists over two games last week, shooting 48.3% from the field and 54.5% from three-point range as Lakeland won twice to improve to 6-0, the team's best start since 1982-83.
Schwarz had 17 points and seven rebounds on Wednesday before leaving the game with 10 minutes left with a cut above his eye in an eventual 86-81 win over Concordia University Wisconsin on Wednesday. He received stitches for the cut and came back Saturday to pile up 26 points and 17 rebounds in the Muskies' 88-81 win over Marian.
In Saturday's win, Schwarz became the NAC's all-time scoring leader by passing Ben Wisniewski of Edgewood College, breaking Wisniewski's record of 1,719 career points with a free throw in the second half for the 24th of his 26 points in the game.
Schwarz leads the Muskies in scoring (24.0) and rebounding (9.8) and also paces the team in three-pointers made (20) and three-point shooting percentage (46.5%). He's shooting 47.1% from the field and 72.2% from the free throw line and also is averaging a career-best 2.3 assists on the season.
With 1,722 career points, Schwarz is now 286 points from the all-time Lakeland career scoring record of 2,008 points held by John Koslowski (1980-84). He also is a part of a Muskie team that is averaging 90.8 points per game and ranks among the NCAA Division III national leaders in scoring, three-point field goal percentage, three-point field goals made per game, assist-to-turnover ratio, turnover margin and fewest turnovers committed per game.
The Lakeland men's team looks to move to 7-0 when it hosts Silver Lake College Friday night at 7 p.m. at Woltzen Gymnasium. The Muskie women will host Concordia Wisconsin on Saturday in an NAC game at home at 2 p.m. Live audio and video of both games will be available online at http://www.lakeland.edu/muskieslive.
