Ward honored by NAC again after big week

Athletics - posted on 2/4/2013

Following two big performances last week, Lakeland College junior Justin Ward (Wisconsin Dells, Wis.) has been named the latest Northern Athletics Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week.

Ward receives the award after playing a big part in two big Muskie wins last week. He averaged 18.5 points, 15.5 rebounds, four blocked shots and two steals as Lakeland defeated Milwaukee School of Engineering and Aurora (Ill.) University in NAC play.

Ward led the Muskies with 17 points, nine rebounds, five blocked shots and three steals in a 59-54 win over MSOE on Tuesday, giving Lakeland revenge for a loss to the Raiders earlier this season. He then posted huge numbers of 20 points, 22 rebounds and three blocks on Saturday as the Muskies came from behind for a 99-94 overtime win over Aurora in a showdown between the NAC's divisional leaders.

Ward wins the award for the second time this season and the third time in his Lakeland career. He is one of three Muskies to win the award, and, along with teammates Joey Burris (So.-Kiel, Wis.) and Jake Schwarz (Sr.-Sheboygan, Wis.), Lakeland players have won the award a total of six times this season.

Ward is averaging 16.4 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game and is shooting 49.1% from the field and 67.0% from the free throw stripe this year. He ranks second in blocks, fourth in rebounding and sixth in scoring in the NAC and is part of a Muskie team that is 18-5 overall and atop the NAC North Division with an 11-3 mark.

Lakeland is back in action on Thursday when it travels to face Maranatha Baptist Bible College at 7 p.m. in Watertown.
