Lakeland looks within for new BLDI director
Adult Education - posted on 4/30/2007

Lakeland College has named Maria Wierichs the director of the college's
Business & Leadership Development Institute (BLDI).
Wierichs had been serving as associate director at Lakeland's Fox Cities Center in Neenah since 2004 and an adjunct instructor for Lakeland's Kellett School of Adult Education. She replaces Hal Wissink, who has retired.
Wierichs, who will work at Lakeland's main campus outside Sheboygan, has a bachelor's degree in speech/communications from UW-Whitewater and a master of arts in counseling from Lakeland.
"It is my ambition to strategically market the current offerings within BLDI and develop additional desired offerings to meet public and corporate needs," Wierichs said. "I have intentions to grow BLDI and further solidify its notability within the community and Lakeland College, an institution I truly believe in."
Prior to joining Lakeland's staff, Wierichs worked in sales and marketing, owned Power of Touch Massage Therapy Clinics in Menasha and New London and spent seven years as a supervisor and trainer with The Guardian Life Insurance Company in Appleton.
"Maria is a creative, collaborative person whose successful experience in building and sustaining internal and external relationships will help Lakeland maintain current and develop new BLDI programs," said Allan Mitchler, Vice President of Enrollment Management.
"Her experience as an adjunct instructor will benefit her recruitment of BLDI instructors, and her interest and proficiency in the utilization of technology in the classroom will help BLDI take advantage of approaches like BlendEd."
BLDI was created by Lakeland in the fall of 2001 as a workforce initiative to meet the training and development needs of managers and executives in small- and medium-sized companies. BLDI offers several professional certificate programs including the SHRM Learning System College Program, the SHRM Human Resource Management Fundamentals Certificate Program, the ASTD Human Performance Improvement (HPI) Certificate Program and the Certified Purchase Manager Prep Review Program.
It also offers programming as part of the college's award-winning accounting program including the Preparation for Practice as a CPA and Preparation for Practice as a CMA courses.
Employers can work with BLDI to design customized learning and performance development courses and workshops that can be delivered at one of Lakeland's seven locations in Wisconsin or a site of the employer's choosing.
