- ABOUT LAKELAND

The day after graduating from Lakeland College, Marc Meade started a job at Orion Energy Systems of Manitowoc. Today he's working with renewable energy deals as a financial and taxation analyst for Orion's newest division, Orion Technology Ventures.
"Our industry is fast moving and Orion is staying ahead of the industry," says Marc. "We are making a difference by helping to improve the environment. I work with a lot of experts and professionals. Many of my co-workers are Lakeland graduates, which is nice. It's great to work for a company that takes care of its people and has forward-thinking leadership."
Marc and his wife, Jessica (Keller) Meade '10, have started a tax and accounting business. She will be the president and manager and Marc will handle client relations.
Marc has vivid memories of a Lakeland experience that included leadership roles in residence life and LC-CAB. "I had a lot of fun working with the best residence hall director, Sally Bork. We ran the best residence hall on campus."
He recalls a Spring Break Trip to Texas with two Japanese students. "They didn't have anything to do for Spring Break, so I invited them to my family's Texas condo. We had a great time touring San Antonio and visiting the Gulf of Mexico. Our connecting flight home from St. Louis to Milwaukee was cancelled, so we rented a Cadillac and drove home."
He also remembers tennis tournaments, being the RA for many great residents, and wonderful LC-CAB events. "LC-CAB is a great way for students to shape their experience on campus. The concert and comedy series sponsored by LC-CAB is a great program."
Marc credits his Lakeland experience for teaching him to take charge. "Lakeland offers several leadership opportunities. I learned a lot from faculty. They were open and honest about their field. I like education that can be applied to one's life." He remembers two faculty members in particular: Rick Gaumer and Karl Elder. "Rick is an all-around professional and he is extremely good at what he does. Karl is an expert in his field and I learned so much from him in a short period of time."
Marc said he misses the people and the environment on the campus where he met his wife. "It was home to me."
What would he tell new graduates? "Add value to the world around you by first making yourself more valuable to the world. What do you know and what can you do that will add value to another person's life? That is where you need to address your focus. We all have value and we all are important."
