Summer Camp Opportunities

Alumni Association - posted on 5/24/2010

Summer is coming, and Lakeland has some great summer camp options for your children. In addition to the long-standing Lakeland tradition of Music Camp, two exciting new camps are planned this year: Theatre Camp for young people in grades 9 through 12; and Soccer Camp, with sessions for various age groups beginning as young as six years old.

Soccer Camp

Soccer camp participants will receive well-rounded instruction from the Lakeland College coaching staff in attacking/defensive concepts, goalkeeping, fitness/conditioning and nutrition. Head coach Dave Madsen says, "Our camps will provide young players with a great opportunity to learn from our coaching staff. We are going to emphasize basic skills and give the players chances to translate the skills they learn to the full game. Our staff is excited to be working with young players from the area to help them develop their skills and passion for the game." For certain camps, there is both a commuter and an overnight option available.

There are different sessions of soccer camp for different age groups:

  • June 21-24 for ages 6 to 10
  • June 28-July 1 for ages 11-14
  • July 19-13 for girls grades 9-12
  • August 2-6 for boys grades 9-12

Theatre Camp

This camp meets from July 11-17 and will be structured around daily workshops, practice time, rehearsals and a showcase. The camp experience will culminate with a closing extravaganza of musical theatre and drama. Campers may select one of three areas of concentration for the week: musical theatre, dramatic acting or technical theatre. Camp director and Lakeland's assistant professor of theatre and speech, Charlie Krebs, remarks: "I am looking forward to what can happen when we bring incredibly talented performers and their collective energy from all over the area to one place at one time. I look forward to helping these students raise the bar in terms of their acting ability and their understanding of how theatre can express the human condition."

Music Camp

For over 50 years, Lakeland College has offered an incredible summer experience for young people who love music. This year, the camp will be held from August 1-7. Campers select a major area of concentration for the week from one of the following: Band, Choir, String Orchestra, or Piano Ensemble. They also choose two elective classes from a wide array of options, including Beginning Improvisation, Clarinet Choir, Group Guitar, Jazz Band, World Drumming, Bucket Brigade, Comedy Improv, Dance for Musical Theatre and Sword Fighting, to name just a few of the many unique and surprising specialties that will be offered. Students will have access to 40 faculty members who are all professional musicians themselves. Charlie Krebs, music camp director, says: "Any student who wants to improve musicianship, nurture creativity and develop collaboration can be immersed in music for 144 hours. Camp participants will learn skills which will help them as soloists or ensemble members whether they intend to pursue a career in music or simply enjoy participating in it for the rest of their lives."

A special rate will be offered for students who wish to pursue both music and theatre camp. Campers will receive 50 percent off the cost of music camp when they also sign up for theatre camp. That is an amazing deal for two weeks of stellar instruction and a rich creative experience for your child this summer.
