President Gould Announces Retirement Timeline

Alumni Association - posted on 6/16/2010

President Stephen A. Gould, an educator and leader on Lakeland's campus for more than four decades, has announced his intention to retire. The college's search for a new president, which is expected to last 14-16 months, is in its beginning stages. Gould, who was named Lakeland's 14th president in the spring of 1998, will remain in his post until a successor has been hired and is in place.

Gould came to Lakeland in 1970 as a German instructor, and has held leadership positions throughout the institution.

"Lakeland College has been a fascinating place for my life's work," Gould said. "It has been a great privilege to work with the thousands of staff, faculty, administration, trustees and friends. It has helped to create today's robust, technologically-advanced and international college."

The college has enjoyed enormous growth during Gould's 12-year administration, including records achieved in enrollment, fundraising and the endowment fund; the construction of the Laun Center for Business and Technology and three new state-of-the-art residence halls; significant renovations to the Chase Science Center and the Nash Visitors Center and a dramatic expansion of the Todd Wehr Athletic Center.

An innovator in designing educational delivery models for working adults, Gould was instrumental in shaping the early days of the Kellett School of Adult Education, which today is the college's largest program. He also lived in Japan while serving as provost and dean as Lakeland developed its two-year campus in Tokyo.

Gould was vice president for off-campus and international programs from 1993-96 and executive vice president in 1997 before being named president. His early tenure included stints as chair of the general studies division, director of admissions, dean of lifelong learning and dean of recruitment and off-campus education.
