Muskies Continue to Roll with Win at Dominican

The Lakeland College women's basketball team improved to 8-4 in the Northern Athletics Conference with a 72-47 rout of Dominican University on Saturday, Jan. 27, in River Forest, Ill.

Although Dominican kept the score fairly close in the first half, heading into the locker room down 32-23, the Muskies (11-7 overall) refused to relax in the second half and forced the Stars to commit 24 turnovers for the game. Lakeland was also boosted by shooting 50 percent from the field in the second half to raise their average to 45 percent for the game.

"Overall we played pretty well," said head coach April Arvan. "Our bench outscored them, so I thought they did a good job putting some points on the board. I want to focus on some things we did defensively and we definitely want to focus on keeping players to their averages."

Although the Stars' Jessica Salinas recorded a double-double with a game-high 25 points and 10 offensive rebounds, the Muskies had three players score in double digits to more than make up for those points. Senior forward Jenna Boehm produced another team-leading effort with 19 points, shooting 70 percent from the field, while junior guard Brenda Paulson added 13 points. Senior forward Danielle Duranceau continued her recent 3-point shooting hot streak, knocking down both her attempts from behind the arc to finish with 10 points, five rebounds and four assists. Senior guard Amanda Thielmann was also active, finishing a perfect eight-for-eight from the charity stripe for eight points.

"Having three double-digit scorers in Boehm, Brenda and Danielle has helped balance our scoring recently," Arvan said. "Danielle is doing a good job taking the outside shot, which opens up things for Boehm in the middle, and Brenda is knocking down some short jumpers for us. Amanda was also aggressive today getting to get to the rim and making her free throws."

Lakeland will return home for their second NAC meeting with Concordia University Chicago of the season on Wednesday, Jan. 31, in hopes of extending their conference win streak to three games.

"It's nice to see that the last two games we have been going in the right direction and playing with some passion," Arvan said. "We're looking to be consistent with our effort level and bring that to every game."

Game time with CUC is set for 7 p.m. in Lakeland's Moose and Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
