Lakeland opened their first game of the season with a 65-58 loss to Lake Forest at the Moose and Dona Woltzen Gymnasium located on the Lakeland campus on Saturday night.
The Muskies forced Lake Forest to commit 24 turnovers, but they were unable to translate the Foresters' misfortune into points of their own.
"Our energy was good we played really hard, but we just didn't cash in and we didn't execute," explained Lakeland head coach Kyle Brumett. "Lake Forest turned it over 24 times and we lost the game. That should never happen, but it happened because we turned it over 19 times."
The Muskies jumped out to early lead, at one point leading by as many as nine points before the Foresters came back to take the lead with just less than four minutes left in the first half. The Foresters went into the locker room with a 28-23 lead.
Lake Forest would continue to lead much of the second half, until the Muskies got a momentum surge from sophomore Peter Worth. Worth stole the ball, then was able was able to convert on both of his free throws, putting the Muskies within in three, 47-44.
Junior Danny Ehnert snagged a steal a few plays later, putting the ball in the hands of junior guard Kris Saiberlich. Saiberlich would nail his first free throw of the night to give the Muskies a 59-51 lead with less than five minutes to play in the game.
However, Lakeland's lead would be short lived as the Foresters came back with three minutes left to take the lead and close out the game with the win.
Lakeland shot just a 37 percent field goal percentage as a team, while the Foresters were 60.9 percent from the field in the second half.
"They got lay-ups and back cuts," said Brumett. "We got screened in the back and our communication wasn't good. I think if you just look at the score, you'll think it's a little low scoring. You are going to immediately think our up-tempo offense failed us, but really I think it was our defense that failed us, our defense and our rebounding."
Junior point guard Aaron Regal led the Muskies with 14 points including four-three points shots, three which came in the first half of the game, and Saiberlich had 13 points and shot 8-for-8 from the free throw line.
However, the most pleasant surprise was the play from Sheboygan native Peter Worth. The sophomore had 10 points and shot 4-for-5 from the free throw line. He also led the Muskies with three steals.
"Peter Worth had a really great game," said Brumett. "He was good defensively, he made his free throws and he played extremely hard. He just played really well."
Junior Danny Ehnert also had a stellar game, despite foul trouble early on. The Muskies' rebound leader last season led Lakeland with seven rebounds in just 21 minutes of play against the Foresters.
"Danny got in foul trouble and we had a hard time playing without him," explained Brumett. "He sat 11 minutes in the first half and eight minutes in the second half. He's a guy we need to have on the floor as much as possible, and we just couldn't because of foul trouble. He led the team in rebounds tonight in just over 20 minutes of action."
The Muskies will be in action over the Thanksgiving weekend when they travel to UW-LaCrosse on Friday, Nov. 27.
