Sophomore Matt Rogers and junior Aaron Regal scored a career high 33 and 26 points, respectively, as Lakeland fell to Wisconsin Lutheran 87-81 in Northern Athletics Conference action in Milwaukee on Tuesday night.
"I wish more people would come out and watch small college basketball games like that one," said Lakeland head coach Kyle Brumett. "From start to finish, both teams played really hard. It was just a great atmosphere to play in and also to watch a game."
The Muskies (13-10, 10-6 NAC) and the Warriors (14-10, 10-6 NAC) traded the lead 10 times in the first half, with the Warriors going into the locker room with a 35-34 advantage.
The second half was also a back-and-fourth game with the lead changing 16 times. The Warriors then went on a 13-1 run with 4:23 remaining, going up by as many as nine points. The Muskies were able to cut the lead to five with 22 seconds remaining, but couldn't pull out the win.
Lakeland had 11 turnovers in the second half, compared to Wisconsin Lutheran's eight. Also factoring into the loss was the Muskies free-throw percentage.
"We just turned the ball over a few too many times," said Brumett. "When you play a team like we did tonight and they are 29-33 from the free throw line, it makes your 20-26 not quite good enough."
In addition to his 33 points, Rogers had five rebounds, right behind junior Danny Ehnert who led the Muskies on the glass with six rebounds.
"Matt played outstanding," said Brumett of Rogers who was 12-18 from the field, 9-12 in the second half "I can't say enough about Matt on the basketball court. I seriously think he just keeps getting better every game. The other night against MSOE everyone contributed. Then there is a night like tonight when you need him to carry us and he just does. He was phenomenal."
The Muskies last won in the Wisconsin Lutheran Recreation Complex in 2004, the only time since 1998. Despite what some call a curse, Brumett didn't believe the "curse" factored into the outcome of the game.
The Muskies will be in action again on Thursday for a NAC game against the Maranatha Baptist. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
