Men Get Fifth Seed in NAC Tourney with Win Over Marian

With a Northern Athletics Conference tournament bid possibly on the line, the Lakeland men's basketball team made sure they wouldn't need a tiebreaker to get in.

Kris Saiberlich led all scorers with 17 points and the Muskies beat Marian 80-64 on Saturday afternoon.

Lakeland (15-10, 12-6 NAC) will hold the No. 5 seed in the tournament and will have to travel to Wisconsin Lutheran on Tuesday for their opening round game.

Danny Ehnert added 12 points and 13 rebounds for his second double-double of the season, and lone senior Tyrone Coleman finished with nine points, 10 rebounds and three assists on Senior Day.

"With as good of a season as Matt [Rogers] has had, Tyrone has had to take sort of a backseat as a senior," head coach Kyle Brumett said. "For some people that's a really hard thing to do but not for Tyrone Coleman. He's a team first guy, and I can't say enough about his character."

The Muskies shot a blistering 56 percent for the entire game, including 14 of their first 21 shots in the game.

"With [Marian] beating us at their place and the outside chance of us not making the tournament, I was really glad at how well our guys came to play today," said Brumett.

David Hoerres also scored 14 points coming off the bench for Lakeland.

"Matt [Rogers] and Aaron [Regal] have carried us so much this year, and it was nice that other guys stepped up when they were off their game," said Brumett.

Marian (13-12, 10-8 NAC) hung around in the game despite the Muskies' hot shooting and were down only seven, 52-45, after a Jerid Holewinski three-pointer. But Lakeland pulled away with an 11-1 run to stretch the lead to 63-46.

The Sabres' Jordan Van Ess scored 16 points and tallied team-highs of three steals and three assists.

Lakeland won seven of their last eight games to close out the season and stake claim to the No. 5. Their only loss came against Wisconsin Lutheran, who the Muskies open the tournament against.

Tip-off on Tuesday is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Wisconsin Lutheran.
