Muskies Finish Seventh at Blugold Invite

The Lakeland Muskies took seventh out of 10 teams this weekend at the Blugold Invite in Eau Claire. Three Muskies finished in the top four of their weight classes.

Junior Calvin O'Neal had the best finish for the Muskies finishing second in the 174 weight class. O'Neal took down Joey Miller of UW-Eau Claire in the opening round 5-3 and then defeated Albert Morgan of UW-Parkside, 6-1. In the semifinals, O'Neal defeated Craig Kreman of Wartburg College, 3-2.  In the finals, O'Neal fell to the third-ranked wrestler in the country, Robbie Gotreau of Augsburg College, 8-2.

Junior Paul Hartt took home third place in the 184 division. Hartt opened the invitational with a win, pinning Ted Siskowski of UW-Eau Claire 3:46 into their match. The junior then lost a 13-4 battle to Mark Mueller of Luther College.  In the consolation round, Hartt defeated Pat Detmer of UW-Oshkosh 10-3. In the battle for third place, Hartt defeated Lucas Haag of UW-Parkside, 9-5.

Sophomore David Copp finished fourth for the Muskies in the 125 division. Copp fell in his first match to Jamie Rocha of Augsburg College, 15-2 and then went to the consolation bracket. Copp defeated Ben McCorstion of Wartburg College 3-2 before facing Rocha again in the match for third place. Rocha would once again defeat the sophomore, this time 8-3.

The Muskies earned 144 points at the tournament. The number one ranked team in Division III wrestling, Augsburg took home the team title with 347 points.

The Muskies will host the Northern Wrestling Association Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 10 at 10 a.m.
