The Lakeland Muskies finished seventh out of 15 teams at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships on Saturday in Elmhurst, Ill.
Sophomore David Copp (125), junior Paul Hartt (184) weight class and senior Mark Vanden Hoogen (285) all finished fourth.
Copp, the fourth seed defeated Dan Crowley of Concordia 13-11 in their opening match. The sophomore then fell to the number one seed Seth Flodeen of Augsburg 11-0 in the semifinal match. In consolation, Copp defeated Christopher Jackson of MSOE 3-2 and fell 0:42 into the match to Munkhbeater Baatar of Saint Johns in the battle for third place.
Hartt, the number three seed, started his regional bracket by defeating Ben Barnes of Chicago 3-0. The Port Charlotte, Fla., native fell to the number six seed Greg Horn of Elmhurst in the next round 9-4. The junior went on to defeat Adam Schultz of Concordia 12-1, Andrew Staberg of St. Johns 12-3, and Brian Kerr of Augustana 10-7. Hartt then fell against Ben Barnes 11-7 to take home fourth place
In the heavyweight division Vanden Hoogen, who is wrestling on a broken foot, went all the way to semifinal where he lost on a tie breaker to Jaran Rutledge of Knox College 7-1. The Green Bay native opened the tournament with a 16-5 win over the number six seed Clayton Neske of Concordia. In consolation, Vanden Hoogen defeated Rodney Knowlton of North Central 8-3 and fell at 3:33 to Neske in the third place match to finish fourth.
Also wrestling in the regional for the Muskies was freshman James Jinning (133), sophomore Kory Theil (141), freshman Jacob Frias (149), freshman Cameron Smit (157), sophomore Cody Klopp (165), sophomore Jonas Flok (174), and sophomore John Wagner (197).
