For the third straight game, the Lakeland College women's basketball team tallied 20+ steals over the opposition on the way to its third consecutive Northern Athletics Conference win over Dominican University, 71-59, on Saturday, Feb. 2, in River Forest, Ill.
The Muskies (10-10, 7-6 NAC) forced the Stars into a whopping 24 turnovers for the game, 10 of which were steals snagged by Lakeland.
"Our full-court pressure really slowed them down and forced them to commit a lot of turnovers," said Lakeland head coach Teri Johnson. "That was one of our goals going into the game, so I was glad to see we were able to accomplish that."
Although Lakeland only shot 35 percent in the first half, the Muskies still led, 30-23, at halftime. However, Lakeland started connecting in a big way in the second period, as the squad shot 51 percent to improve to 43 percent for the game to lengthen the scoring gap between the two teams and seal the win.
Three Muskies reached double digits on offense, as sophomore guard KC Blahnik led the scoring drive once again with 18 points. Seniors Peggy Keiper and Brenda Paulson followed with 15 and 13 points, respectively, and Keiper topped the rebounding column with a team-high eight boards.
"KC had a great game for us and Peggy shot very well from the outside," Johnson said. "Brenda also had another complete game between scoring and rebounding and did really well on defense. This was probably three games in a row now that she has played very well for us."
The Muskies will look to keep their NAC win streak rolling this coming week, as they return home for a pair of conference contests against Milwaukee School of Engineering on Tuesday, Feb. 5, and Alverno College on Saturday, Feb. 9.
"We definitely have some momentum going into our games next week," Johnson said. "We'll take this win and run with it because Dominican is a good team that has improved throughout the season and has knocked off a couple of the top teams."
Tuesday's game time with MSOE is set for 7 p.m. at Lakeland.
