Clutch foul shooting propels Lakeland to victory

Athletics - posted on 12/18/2007

The Lakeland College men's basketball team got some clutch free throwing shooting in the closing minute to secure a 56-52 win at MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Ill.

The Muskies (6-4), winners of six of their last seven games, made six free throws out of seven chances in the game's closing minute to seal the win, including three from sophomore Khendal Andrews, a pair from junior Peter Worth and one from sophomore Phil Sontag. MacMurray's Neil Compton missed a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left that would have tied the game at 55.

Senior Kris Saiberlich led Lakeland with 18 points, including a 4 of 7 performance from 3-point range. Freshman Trevor McKown added 10 points. As a team, Lakeland made 13 of 15 foul shots which helped offset a 34.6 percent shooting performance for the game.

"They played pretty well, and we responded when they made some runs in the second half," Lakeland head coach Kyle Brumett said. "Some of our guys showed a lot of character to step up and make those free throws when we had to have them to get this win."

The Muskies conclude their pre-Christmas road swing Thursday with a 2 p.m. game in Mount Vernon, Iowa, against Cornell College.
