Muskies shooting goes cold in Tip-Off Tournament final
Athletics - posted on 11/22/2008
SHEBOYGAN-Lakeland struggled to find its offensive touch Saturday night, scoring 17 points in the second half as the Muskies were defeated by Cornell 54-43 in the championship game of the "Play with Grace" Coaches vs. Cancer Tip-Off Tournament at Wolzen Gymnasium.
With Cornell leading a majority of the first half, Mary Dennewitz (Chicago, Ill.) scored five consecutive points and Kasey Gussert (Kingsford, Mich.) added a free throw as Lakeland cut the Rams' lead to four at the break.
Tiffany Cowan and Teresa Cecchetti scored the first seven points of the second half for Cornell as the Rams broke their lead out to 11. After scoring with 17:43 in the second, the Muskie defense held Cornell scoreless until the 9:40 mark. However, the Muskies could only muster six points of their own in the eight minute span, cutting the lead to five. A 3-pointer with 7:51 remaining was the last time Lakeland recorded a field goal until scoring the last basket of the night with 17 seconds on the clock.
"We couldn't connect," Lakeland head coach Teri Johnson said. "We shot very well the past two games and you can't always shoot like that. We had wide open looks, we had layup opportunities, and we just could not connect at all. One thing that kept us in the game was being able to get to the free throw line."
Lakeland shot 12-of-48 for the game, only making 25 percent of their attempts. The Muskies were out-paced on the glass, recording 30 rebounds to Cornell's 39. Dennewitz lead the Muskie charge with 14 points.
Tiffany Cowan and Charlotte Millas both scored 16 points for Cornell as the Rams shot 43 percent for the game.
"Cornell is a well-rounded team," said Johnson. "They're a little bit bigger than we are, but this is the type of team that is going to prepare us for our conference season."
Lakeland (2-1) opens its Northern Athletics Conference slate Wednesday, November 26 as they welcome Rockford to Wolzen Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
