SHEBOYGAN - After climbing to a lead early in the second half, the Lakeland men's basketball team surrendered a 27-2 run to Aurora, helping to end the Muskies' winning streak at three games with an 89-68 loss to the Spartans in a Northern Athletics Conference contest on Saturday afternoon at Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
Lakeland (9-5, 3-3 NAC) took its first lead since early in the opening half after freshman Josh Regal (Suring) drained a 3-pointer with 15 minutes remaining. After the Muskies took a 45-43 lead with 14:35 to play, the Spartans scored the next 16 points and held Lakeland without a field goal for more than eight minutes.
The defeat was the first at home for the Muskies (9-5, 3-3 NAC), who turned the ball over 23 times and surrendered 52 points in the paint against Aurora's dribble-drive, spread offensive attack.
"We didn't execute our game plan, offensively or defensively," Lakeland head coach Aaron Aanonsen said. "Aurora exploited our weaknesses and was the aggressor."
Lakeland outscored the Spartans (7-8, 5-2) off the bench and on second chance points.
Junior forward Anthony Cobb (Milwaukee) led the Muskies with 16 points (7-of-8 shooting) and six rebounds in 24 minutes off the bench. Regal posted 14 points and five assists, while freshman Jake Schwarz (Sheboygan) registered 14 points and seven rebounds.
Aurora shot 52.2 percent for the game as all five of its starters posted double-figures in points.
"We really just have to get better, and get back to basics this week," Aanonsen said.
Lakeland begins a three-game road trip Tuesday at Concordia, Wis. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in Mequon.
