Muskies take first at MSOE Invite

The Lakeland Muskies wrestling team took 1^st place at the MSOE Invite, finishing eight points ahead of runner-up UW-Oshkosh. The Muskies edged the Titans 125-118 to take the title.

The Muskies has three wrestlers win championships in their weight class: senior Kory Theil (141), senior Jonas Flok (157) and junior Adam Sutter (285). In addition, sophomore Isaac Roberson (141) finished in second, junior Aaron Aronstam (197) finished in third, junior Jacob Frias(165), freshman Jake Montie (141) and sophomore Bill Wood (285) finished in fourth, senior Tom Mann (184) finished in fifth, and senior JD Sylvanus (184), freshman Tyler Laturi (165), and senior David Copp (125) finished in sixth.

Theil, the no. 1 seed at 141, opened with a 10-1 victory over Jeff Coners of Wheaton, defeated Nathan Waslaski of St. Olaf, scored a 7-2 victory over no. 4 seed Curtis Hobbs of Central, and in the finals shut out no. 2 seed Alex Mueller of UW-Oshkosh 6-0. The title was Thiel's second straight at the MSOE Invite.

Flok opened up his day with a pin of Jake Bauer from UW-Oshkosh in 2:30. He defeated no. 3 Jeremiah Potter of Concordia, Wis. 9-5 and edged out no. 1 seed Joel VandeBoom of MSOE in the finals of the 157 bracket. Flok scored his final points with 10 seconds remaining in the third period of his victory over VandeBoom.

Sutter pinned his first two opponents of the day, taking down James Wagner of Knox in 35 seconds and pinning Andy Scovronski of Concordia, Wis. in 2:35. In his third match, Sutter defeated no. 4 seed Ted Dirkx of Central 8-2. In the championship match, wrestling against no. 2 Cody Weber of UW-Plattville who had pinned both previous opponents, Sutter won an easy decision 10-2.

"I thought that we were capable of winning and was pumped to see it happen for the guys," said Lakeland head coach Pete Rogers. "Everyone up and down the line wrestled well, and the backup guys placed and won team points for us today. After wrestling some of the toughest in the nation, it was great to see our guys get excited."

The Muskies return to the mat next week at the MBBC, NBBC Duals.
