Lakeland wrestlers place third at Al Hanke Invite

The No. 30 Lakeland wrestling team placed five of its ten wrestlers in the top three of their respective weight classes en route to a third-place finish with 135.5 points at the Al Hanke Invite in Elmhurst, Ill.

"Our guys lost to some pretty tough teams in the finals," Lakeland coach Pete Rogers said. "We wrestled solidly, but could have wrestled better. We were good, but not great."

No. 14 Elmhurst, the invitational's host, won the tournament with 151.5 points, 8.5 points ahead of second-place Olivet, which is ranked 16th.

The Muskies were led by senior Jonas Flok (157 pounds) and juniors Adam Sutter (285) and Jake Frias (165), who each placed second.

Flok, an Egg Harbor native, was defeated in the finals by Olivet's Jason Brew, who is ranked No. 2 in the nation at 157 pounds.

Sutter (Gladstone, Mich.) lost in a 3-1 decision to Elmhurst's Mark Corsello. Sutter defeated Cosello 3-2 on Jan. 8 at Elmhurst.

An Oak Lawn, Ill., native, Frias suffered a heart-breaking 1-0 setback by decision in the finals to Greg Horn of Elmhurst.

Senior David Copp (Oostburg) lost his opening match in the 125-pound division, but rebounded for a third-place finish.

Kory Thiel, a 141-pound senior from Crystal Lake, Ill., also placed third for the Muskies.

"A lot of guys are right there, but we have to get over that hump between being a good team and a great team," Rogers said. "Everyone busted their butts, but we're right on that border."

The Muskies return to dual action next Saturday at the MSOE Duals in Milwaukee. Matches are set to begin at 10 a.m.
