Muskies place seventh at NAC Championship; Petit earns all-conference

The Lakeland men's golf team placed seventh at the Northern Athletics Conference Championship on Oct. 13-14 at the par-72, 6,750-yard Irish Course of Whistling Straits in Kohler.

The Muskies finished with a 677 for the two-day tournament, scoring a 339 on Tuesday after a 338 on Monday. They finished 60 strokes behind MSOE, the tournament's champion.

"We didn't play our best golf of the year, but we took steps throughout the season that will help next year," Lakeland head coach Tyler Bormann said. "I know they'll be a work in progress until we can get some junior and senior leadership and maturity."

Lakeland freshman Gary Petit (Monroe) was the highest Muskie finisher, posting a 17-over par 181 (81-80), good for 14th place. Petit was named to the All-NAC team following the tournament.

"The way Gary handled himself was impressive," Bormann said. "He struggled at times but got control of his golf game when he needed to. He had a solid year and was by far our most consistent player. He should be proud of getting all-conference honors."

Fellow freshman Ben Laubusch (Germantown) was not far behind Petit, firing a 165 (85-80), which tied for 16th.

"Ben Laubusch showed maturity on the second day," Bormann said. "He found ways to make adjustments after the first day."

Sophomore Mike Ruzek (Manitowoc) tied for 24th after carding a 170 (83-87) for the championship.

Freshman Brian Ballisteri (New Berlin) finished 33rd with a 181 (89-92), while freshman Ben Luedtke (Freedom) rounded out Muskie scoring with a 188 (90-98), good for a tie for 36th.

This event concludes the season for Lakeland.
