MEQUON, WIS. - Mary Dennewitz is no stranger to coming through in the clutch.
The sophomore guard out of Chicago, Ill., hit four free throws in the final 35 seconds as the Lakeland College women's basketball team knocked off conference-leader Concordia Wisconsin 72-66 in its final Northern Athletics Conference game of the season.
Senior KC Blahnik (Gladstone, Mich.) put the Muskies (18-6, 13-4 NAC) up by two on a three-point play when she scored a layup and converted a free throw with 1:40 remaining in the half. Freshman Dana Henrichs followed a missed 3-pointer by Concordia Wisconsin with a layup of her own, and after Dennewitz went 4-of-6 from the free throw line on the next three Lakeland possessions, Henrichs scored the final two points of the game off of a Blahnik steal with one second remaining to lock up the victory.
"It was a hard-fought game on both ends," Lakeland head coach Teri Johnson said. "Coming in we knew it would be a good game. Winning tonight gives us a lot of momentum heading into the challenge game and conference tournament ."
Despite leading a majority of the opening ten minutes, Concordia Wisconsin scored with 24 second remaining to even it up at 36-36 entering halftime, the game's seventh tie. The Muskies committed just two turnovers in the opening twenty minutes and seven the entire game.
"Tonight came down to taking care of the ball. Our point guards did a great job of running the offense. We've been stressing composure and staying focused. We knew in the second half we needed to be mentally tough, and coming down to the final minute we needed to be aggressive and want it ."
Blahnik led all scorers with 22 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the field and a 6-of-8 performance from the free throw line. She also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Dennewitz followed up with 13 points as Henrichs and senior Katie Kilton (Waukesha, Wis.) each scored in double figures with 10 points apiece, and Leah Eisner (Stevens Point, Wis.) came off the bench to add a solid five points a seven rebounds.
Brittany Zietlow paced the Falcons with 17 points. Pear Wallace added 12 points with a perfect 4-4 shooting night and 13 rebounds.
With the victory, Lakeland locked up sole possession of second place in the NAC north division. The Muskies will travel to Benedictine on Saturday for the NAC Challenge Game and will enter next week's NAC conference tournament as the #3 seed.
