The Lakeland men's basketball team picked up its first victory of the 2009 season with a 77-63 win over Oberlin (Ohio) in a North Central College Holiday Inn Select Tip-Off Tournament consolation game on Saturday afternoon in Naperville, Ill.
On Friday night, Lakeland fell 89-78 against Mississippi College.
"We battled hard in our two games this weekend and really had good togetherness," Lakeland coach Aaron Aanonsen said. "We made steps for the benefit of our team, and need to continue to play with the intensity and energy we had."
After Oberlin scored the opening basket of the contest, the Muskies (1-2) went on an 11-0 run and didn't surrender their lead for the remainder of the game.
"We got off to a good start against Oberlin's zone defense," Aanonsen said. "We forced 20 turnovers, so our defensive intensity was there."
Lakeland, which shot 51 percent for the game and held a plus-14 rebounding margin, built its lead to as many as 27 points in the second half. The Yeomen (1-2) narrowed the gap with a late run after the game had already been decided.
Sophomore forward Jake Schwarz (Sheboygan, Wis.) poured in team-highs of 30 points (on 13-of-19 shooting) and 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Josh Regal (Suring, Wis.) chipped in with 14 points, including a 7-of-7 performance from the free throw line.
Against Mississippi College (1-0), Lakeland's 21 turnovers turned into 26 Choctaw points. The Muskies were also outscored 36-20 in the paint.
"We had some turnovers that led to easy baskets," Aanonsen said. "We did a decent job of being aggressive and going to the basket, but their athleticism and physical play inside ended up being too much for us."
The Muskies jumped out to a 25-16 advantage just over eight minutes into the game, but were outscored 30-10 for the rest of the half.
A 3-pointer by senior Khendal Andrews (Kankakee, Ill.) cut the Lakeland deficit to seven just under five minutes into the second half, but that was the closest the Muskies would get.
"We did some really nice things and played about as well as we could have," Aanonsen said. "We didn't bow down to them. Every time we made a run, they answered."
Regal led the Muskies, who made 13-of-25 from 3-point range, with 21 points, four rebounds and six assists. Schwarz tallied 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Lakeland returns to action for its home opener this Tuesday against Finlandia at 7 p.m.
