AURORA, Ill. - The Lakeland men's basketball suffered its third consecutive defeat Saturday, dropping an 82-74 decision at Aurora in a Northern Athletics Conference showdown.
The Muskies (6-8 overall, 3-3 NAC) shot 50 percent and made eight 3-pointers in the second half, but were unable to take a lead after a run by the Spartans midway through the first half.
A pair of Lakeland players recorded career performances in the loss. Junior forward Trevor McKown (Hot Springs, S.D.) set career highs with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Sophomore guard Josh Regal (Suring, Wis.) posted a career-best 10 assists to go along with 14 points in the contest.
After gaining momentum going into the locker room by cutting an 11-point deficit to three, the Aurora lead whittled to 40-39 after a jumper by McKown at the 18:08 mark.
However, the Spartans (7-7, 4-3) jumped Lakeland for a 10-0 run, taking a 50-39 advantage with 14:28 remaining.
The Muskies cut the lead to five points with just over six minutes remaining, but Aurora's Dusty Magee, who made eight 3-pointers in the game, dashed any momentum Lakeland gained with a quick 3 on the ensuing possession.
After a see-saw battle for the first 12 minutes of the game, Aurora extended its lead to 11 thanks to a trio of 3-pointers and three Lakeland turnovers in a minute-and-a-half span.
The Muskies shot 45.9 percent from the field and 41.4 percent from 3-point range for the contest. The Spartans shot 50 percent and 13-of-24 (54.2 percent) from beyond the arc.
Lakeland surrendered eight offensive rebounds and turned it over 10 times in the second half, compared to two offensive rebounds given up and seven turnovers in the first half.
Sophomore forward Jake Schwarz (Sheboygan, Wis.) tallied 21 points and eight rebounds, while senior guard Khendal Andrews (Kankakee, Ill.) added 19 points on five 3-pointers.
Lakeland returns to action Tuesday at home against North Division rival Concordia, Wis. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at Moose & Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
