Lakeland finishes sweep of rival Edgewood
Athletics - posted on 2/2/2010
MADISON, Wis. - After a sub-par performance Saturday on the road, the Lakeland men's basketball team finished its three-game road swing with a crucial 69-55 victory over Edgewood in a Northern Athletics Conference contest Tuesday.
"On Saturday, we didn't contain Wisconsin Lutheran's shooters or box out," Lakeland coach Aaron Aanonsen said, referencing Lakeland's 90-71 loss. "Tonight, we limited Edgewood to six offensive rebounds, and contained and contested every single shot."
The Muskies (9-11 overall, 6-6 NAC), who had lost three of four entering the game, made a late first-half run to take a 34-25 lead at the break.
Lakeland shot just 37 percent in the second half after shooting 50 percent in the first, but made 11-for-15 from the line in the period to close out the Eagles.
"Offensively, we shared the basketball and didn't turn it over," Aanonsen said. "We got good looks on the inside and from outside."
The victory marked Lakeland's second straight triumph over a North Division opponent on the road and finished off a season sweep of the rival Eagles.
Edgewood (10-10, 7-5) shot just 40.9 percent for the contest and made only 5-of-21 (23.8 percent) from 3-point range.
Defensively, the Muskies kept Edgewood off-balance for the majority of the game, forcing 15 turnovers against only 10 of its own.
"The biggest key was that we contained the basketball," Aanonsen said. "We controlled the tempo, got stops and grabbed rebounds."
After making a 9-0 run in the final 4:21 of the first half, Lakeland opened up a 42-27 advantage when sophomore guard Eric Vandivier (Mt. Prospect, Ill.) knocked down a 3-pointer with 16:42 remaining in the contest.
The Eagles would narrow the deficit to 10 at the 6:04 mark, but sophomore guard Josh Regal (Suring, Wis.) ended any hope of a comeback with consecutive runners in the lane.
Sophomore forward Jake Schwarz (Sheboygan, Wis.) led the Muskies with 20 points, four assists and a season-high 15 rebounds. Senior guard Khendal Andrews (Kankakee, Ill.) finished with 12 points and three assists, while freshman guard Jamie Koebe (Seymour, Wis.) added eight points off the bench.
For the game, the Muskies out-rebounded the Eagles, 35-30, and made eight 3-pointers. Edgewood made only 14-of-24 (58.3 percent) from the free throw line.
Lakeland returns home this Saturday against Dominican at 4:15 p.m.
