Athletics - posted on 2/16/2010

ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Lakeland men's basketball team fell behind early in the second half and wasn't able to recover, falling 76-68 at Rockford in a Northern Athletics Conference on Tuesday night.

With the loss, the Muskies (11-13 overall, 8-8 NAC) fall into fourth place in the North Division and will play either at Dominican or at home against Wisconsin Lutheran in the NAC Challenge game this Saturday, pending the results of Thursday's Wisconsin Lutheran-Dominican match-up.

Rockford (13-11, 8-8), which took third place due to a season sweep of the Muskies, shot 54.7 percent from the field to offset 24 turnovers. The Regents attacked the rim aggressively against the Lakeland defense, scoring 44 points in the paint.

The Muskies shot just 35.7 percent for the game, including a 28.9 percent clip in the second half, and converted only 20 points in the paint.

The Regents extended their 39-34 halftime advantage to 46-36 just under a minute and a half into the second half, and pushed the margin to 17 with 11:52 remaining by taking advantage of five consecutive Lakeland turnovers.

Sophomore guard P.J. Marion (Milwaukee, Wis.) led the Muskie attack by tying a career high with 14 points to go along with four assists off the bench. Sophomore Josh Regal (Suring, Wis.) and senior Khendal Andrews (Kankakee, Ill.) chipped in with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Sophomore Germell Heard (Milwaukee, Wis.) and junior Sam Schroeder (Shawano, Wis.) finished with six rebounds apiece. The Muskies grabbed 19 offensive rebounds in the game, with nine coming from Heard and Schroeder combined.

For the second game in a row, sophomore forward Jake Schwarz (Sheboygan, Wis.), Lakeland's leading scorer, was sidelined due to a knee injury.

Depending on who the Muskies play in the Challenge on Saturday, the team will either be the seventh seed or the No. 8 seed in the eight-team conference tournament.
