RIVER FOREST, ILL.-The Lakeland College men's basketball team rode a trio of strong shooting performances to a 68-61 victory Saturday afternoon at Dominican in the Northern Athletics Conference challenge game.
Trevor McKown (Hot Springs, S.D.) was the lone Lakeland (12-13, 8-8 NAC) starter to score double digits as he recorded 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting and nine rebounds. Christian Baker (Bloomington, Ill.) came off the bench to match McKown's 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting, and Jamie Koebe (Seymour, Wis.) was nearly perfect from the floor, shooting 4-of-5, including two 3-pointers and a pair of free throws as he tallied 13 points. Josh Regal (Suring, Wis.) filled up the box score with eight points, seven rebounds and seven assists.
"One of our keys today was to pound the ball inside," Lakeland head coach Aaron Aanonsen said. "Trevor and Christian gave us a great effort in establishing our post game today along with Jamie's performance beyond the 3-point line."
The Muskies led for most of the game's opening 10 minutes before RJ Dilay scored five points for on consecutive possessions as Dominican (9-16, 7-9) jumped to a 17-14 lead at 10:25 of the first half.
Lakeland responded with a quick 8-0 run over the next two-and-a-half minutes to pull ahead 22-17 and never trailed in the remainder of the game. They eventually pushed the lead to as many as 16 points in the second half on a Koebe 3-pointer before holding off the Starts in the final minutes of the seven point win.
The Muskies shot an impressive 15-of-26 (57.7 percent) in the second half and 52 percent for the day. They also dominated on the glass, out-rebounding Dominican 45 to 25.
"We've struggled at times with our rebounding, and with Dominican shooting a low percentage (31.7 percent) and not turning the ball over, being able to out-rebound them really helped. With Jake Schwartz and his 25 points per game still out of the lineup, it was good to see some other players pick up the slack as we head into the conference tournament.
Lakeland travels to Aurora on Tuesday, Feb. 23 in the quarterfinals of the 2010 NAC Tournament.
