On Wednesday night, senior guard Chelsea Coenen led the Muskies with 13 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead the Lakeland College women's basketball team to a 67-61 victory over Marian University.
Lakeland (6-7, 3-6 NAC) never trailed in the game, but Marian (9-7, 4-7 NAC) made it close by capitalizing on some missed opportunities by the Muskies.
The Muskies shot well in the first half and played good defense, building a 10 point, 35-35 lead at halftime. However, Marian got hot and picked up their defense in the second half and was able to tie the game twice. The Sabres trailed 53-35 at the 12:19 mark, but went on a 25-7 run to tie the game at 60 with 5:37 left in the second half. The Muskies were able to pull away, playing solid defense and hitting their free throws down the stretch.
Lakeland shot 35 percent (25-72) from the field, 17 percent (2-12) from the three-point arc, and 68 percent (15-22) from the charity stripe. For the game, Marian shot 33 percent (17-52) from the field, 30 percent (10-33) from behind the arc, and 63 percent (17-27) from the free throw line. The key to the game was the turnovers; Marian had 27 while Lakeland had only 11.
Junior Allison Davis recorded her first double-double of the season scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Senior Mary Dennewitz and junior Alyssa Schuttenhelm each added eight points.
Marian's Alexis Becker had a game-high 22 points and 11 rebounds.
"This was a crucial division game for us," said Lakeland head coach Teri Johnson. "Tonight we played patient, well executed basketball. We had some lapses on the defensive end and didn't play well in terms of limiting their offensive boards. We gained a lot of confidence tonight and that's important as we near the end of the season and every game is important."
Lakeland returns to action Saturday, Jan. 22, when they host Aurora University in a Northern Athletics Conference, cross division showdown. Tip-off is 2 p.m.
