Muskies conquer Spartans

Junior guard Becca Tilleman led the Muskies with 16 points and recorded nine steals to lead the Lakeland College women's basketball team to a 59-47 victory over Aurora University.

Lakeland (7-9, 4-6 NAC) trailed early on, but their solid defense kept Aurora (4-13, 1-9 NAC) from pulling away.

The Muskies shot well in the first half and played good defense, leading by as many as 14 and taking a 28-18 lead at halftime. The Muskies forced 15 turnovers and had 13 steals, led by Tilleman who at six in the first half. Lakeland shot 36 percent (12-33) from the field, 30 percent (3-10) from the three-point arc, and 50 percent (1-2) from the line. The Spartans managed to shoot just 33 percent (6-18) from the field, 29 percent (2-7) from behind the arc, and 100 percent from the charity stripe (4-4).

For the game the Muskies shot 37 percent (24-65) from the field, 29 percent (5-17) from the three-point arc, and 67 percent (6-9) from the charity stripe. Aurora shot 35 percent (17-49) from the field, 22 percent (4-18) from behind the arc, and 69 percent (9-13) from the free throw line. The key to the game was the turnovers; Aurora had 23 while Lakeland had just 14.

Senior Chelsea Coenen had 11 points and seven rebounds and freshman Aimee Thrune added eight points.

Aurora's Michelle Perry had a game-high 19 points and 11 rebounds.

"We played a complete game today and we were able to take them out of their rhythm," said Lakeland head coach Teri Johnson. "Becca Tilleman had an outstanding game, probably one of the most complete games of her career. Her intensity on the defensive end is something we depend on and today she was solid on defense and elevated the team's play."

Lakeland returns to action Tuesday, Jan. 25, as they travel to Milwaukee, Wis., for a Northern Athletics Conference North Division showdown with Alverno College. Tip-off is 7 p.m.
