Muskies win overtime thriller
Athletics - posted on 1/29/2011
Senior guard Mary Dennewitz led the Muskies with 22 points off the bench to lead the Lakeland College women's basketball team to a 74-66 overtime victory over MSOE.
Lakeland (8-10, 5-7 NAC) took control of the game early, but had trouble finishing as they had yet another close finish.
The Muskies built a 14 point halftime lead, 34-20, behind the sharpshooting of Dennewitz and Alyssa Schuttenhelm. Dennewitz had 11 points and Schuttenhelm had six to lead Lakeland, who shot 52 percent (13-25) from the field, 50 percent (3-6) from behind the three-point arc, and 56 percent (5-9) from the free throw line. Their defense stifled the Raiders, as they shot just 35 percent (8-23) from the field, 67 percent (2-3) from behind the arc, and 67 percent (2-3) from the charity stripe.
Lakeland cooled off in the second half, as their 16 point lead began to fade away. Dennewitz continued to carry the Muskies scoring nine more point in the second half, with Aimee Thrune adding seven. Unfortunately, the team shot just 36 percent (9-25) from the field, 80 percent (4-5) from three, and 64 percent (7-11) from the line. The Raiders got hot at the right time, shooting 59 percent (16-27) from the field and converting 10 of 11 free throw attempts.
Overtime belonged to Lakeland, as the Muskies hit 7 of their 8 free throws to close out the game, outscoring the Raiders 11-3 in overtime. Although it got tight, Lakeland was able to hit the shots when it counted and get some key stops to escape with the win.
"We played well in the overtime period and did what we needed to get the win," said Lakeland head coach Teri Johnson. "We scored early and got a few stops, and then our girls hit the big free throws at the end to seal the win. We are excited to get the victory but understand that we still have work to do to get to the level we want to be."
Junior Alyssa Schuttenhelm tied her season-high with 16 points and added a season-high seven rebounds. Freshman Aimee Thrune added nine points and senior Chelsea Coenen had seven points and seven rebounds.
Carol Cayo led MSOE with 21 points and 16 rebounds.
Lakeland returns to action Wednesday, Feb. 2, when they host Wisconsin Lutheran College in a Northern Athletics Conference North Division showdown. Tip-off is 7 p.m.
