Lakeland falls to Marian

Junior Alyssa Schuttenhelm led the Lakeland College women's basketball team with 10 points, but it wasn't enough as the Muskies suffered a 57-53 setback at Marian University on Saturday.

Lakeland (9-14, 6-11 NAC) took control of the game early and was able to keep the home crowd silent for much of the first half. The Muskies made their run at the 12:48 mark, with a two point, 9-7 lead. Six minutes later the Muskies had used a 12-4 run to take a ten point, 21-11 lead with 5:04 left in the first half. The teams would trade baskets and Lakeland would take a nine point, 28-19 lead, into the half.

The Muskies first half charge was led by junior Becca Paulson and senior Chelsea Coenen who had six and five points respectively. Junior Allison Davis was big on the boards, leading the team with five rebounds.

Lakeland shot well in the first half, going 10 for 28 (35.7 percent) from the field and 3 for 8 (37.5 percent) from behind the three point arc. They played well defensively as well, allowing Marian to shoot just 27 percent (7-26) from the field and 8 percent (1-13) from behind the arc.

Marian started the second half with a lot of energy and was able to take the lead a couple of times, but Lakeland took back control. With Marian leading 39-38, with 11:33 left in the game, an Erin Cepa three-pointer sparked a 15-5 run by the Muskies to give them a nine-point, 53-44 lead. Unfortunately, Lakeland couldn't hold the lead, as Marian used a 13-0 run to end the game, 57-53.

It was a tale of two halves for the Muskies, who couldn't match the offensive charge of Marian in the second half and were dominated on the boards. Marian out-rebounded Lakeland 30-16 in the second half and 51-38 for the game.

For the game, Lakeland shot 35 percent (21-60) from the field and 25 percent (4-16) from the three-point arc. Marian, although not much better, got the win shooting 35.7 percent (20-56) from the field and 23.3 percent (7-30) from behind the three-point arc.

Coenen finished the game with nine points and five rebounds and freshman Aimee Thrune added eight points and four boards. Schuttenhelm scored all ten of her points in the second half and also grabbed five rebounds.

Marian's Brooke Haen had a game high 27 points, hitting all seven of the team's three-pointers.

Lakeland returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 16, as they play host to Edgewood College. It will also be senior night and a Pink Zone game, with all funds going to the Kay Yow Foundation. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
