Grapplers go 2-1 at UW-Oshkosh Duals

OSHKOSH, Wis.- The Lakeland College wrestling team went 2-1 at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Duals Saturday morning in Oshkosh, Wis.

The Muskies (5-5) claimed team victories over Wheaton College (Ill.) 37-10, and Maranatha Baptist Bible College 43-3, while suffering a 42-7 setback to No. 18 UW-Oshkosh.

Junior Miguel Luis (Oak Lawn, Ill.) and sophomore Joel Frias (Oak, Lawn, Ill.) lead the way for Lakeland as each grappler ended the duals a perfect 3-0, including Lakeland's only two wins against UW-Oshkosh at 174 and 141, respectively.

 Luis earned the 9-0 major decision over Aaron Geiger in the team's first match against UW-Oshkosh. Luis went on to beat Wheaton's Cameron Fox, 4-2 while also dominating Russell Townsend in a 10-0 major decision of Maranatha Baptist Bible College.


 Frias also had a dominating day, beating Chad McLaughlin 2-0 of No. 18 ranked UW-Oshkosh. Frias pinned Aaron Downs of Maranatha Baptist in 1:35. He also earned a forfeit over Wheaton College.

It was an impressive showing for Lakeland, as seven out of 10 weight classes had winning records on the day. Grant Franson (Lindenhurst, Ill.), Jacob Bugajski (Chicago,Ill.) Nick Kusta (Oak Lawn, Ill.), Rob Forgette (Menominee, Mich.) and Tom Phalin (Sheboygan, Wis.) all posted a 2-1 day.

The grapplers return to action as they travel to Mequon, Wis. to take on Northern Wrestling Association foe, Concordia, Wis., on Wednesday, Jan. 12. The match is set for 7 p.m.
