Big second half help Muskies hand Falcons first NAC loss

The Lakeland College women's basketball team handed Northern Athletics Conference North Division co-leader Concordia University Wisconsin their first NAC loss, a 53-51 Muskie win.

The Muskies (3-3, 2-2 NAC) battled back and forth with the Falcons, but were able to pull out the two-point victory thanks to outstanding defense and clutch shooting.

The first half proved that on this night, both teams were ready to play, with six ties and four lead changes, while Concordia Wisconsin would take a four point, 23-19 lead at the half.

In the first half, the Muskies shot 31 percent (9-29) from the field and just 11 percent (1-9) from behind the 3-point line. Sophomore Leah Eisner led Lakeland with six points, while senior Becca Tilleman led the team with five rebounds. Their defense was able to limit the Falcons to 30 percent (9-30) from the field, 37.5 percent (3-8) from behind the arc and 2-for-2 from the free throw line.

In the second half, the Muskies were able to get in a rhythm and build a lead. Strong defense and clutch shooting down the stretch helped secure the two point victory.

The Muskies shot 50 percent (12-24) in the second half, 60 percent (3-5) from behind the arc, and 70 percent (7-10) from the charity stripe. They were led by sophomore Jessica Genke who scored 12 of her 14 points in the second half on 5-for-6 shooting while also grabbing five rebounds.

The Muskies had two other players score in double figures led by senior Alyssa Schuttenhelm who had 12 points and six rebounds, while Eisner finished with ten points. Meanwhile, Genke ended with 14 points and seven rebounds.

Lakeland returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 10, as they host NAC South Division foe Concordia University Chicago at 7 p.m.
