The Lakeland College women's basketball team defeated Northern Athletics Conference North Division rival Edgewood College, 69-62, on Wednesday night in Madison, Wis.
The Muskies (18-6, 13-5 NAC) won their ninth straight game and move into a tie for second in the NAC North Division thanks to a solid defensive effort.
It was an up and down first half with three ties and nine lead changes. Lakeland was hampered by foul trouble most of the first half, but used a 9-4 run to take a 28-27 lead into the locker room. Lakeland out-rebounded Edgewood 18-14 and won the paint, outscoring the Eagles 16-10 inside. The Muskies were too careless with the ball though, committing 16 turnovers leading to 12 Edgewood points. Sophomore Jessica Genke (Kiel, Wis.) led the team with 10 points and four rebounds.
For the half Lakeland shot 52.4 percent (11-for-21) from the field, 20 percent (1-for-5) from the 3-point line and 71.4 percent (5-for-7) from the free throw line. On the defensive end, the Muskies held Edgewood to 25.9 percent (7-for-27) shooting from the field, 28.6 percent (2-for-7) from behind the arc and 78.6 percent (11-for-14) from the charity stripe.
Lakeland came out ready to play in the second half, using a 12-5 run to stretch the lead to eight points, 40-32, five minutes into the half. Edgewood wouldn't go without a fight, using a 10-3 run of its own to get to within four, 48-44, with 5:16 to play. During the Eagles run, the Muskies went five minutes without a basket until a Genke layup with 4:40 to play gave Lakeland the 50-44 advantage. Lakeland shoots 9-for-13 from the free throw line in the final two minutes to get the victory.
Lakeland finishes the game shooting 45.3 percent (24-for-53) from the field, 45.5 percent (5-for-11) from behind the arc and 59.3 percent (16-for-27) from the free throw line. The Muskies defense held the Eagles to 32.3 percent (20-for-62) shooting, 26.3 percent (5-for-19) from the 3-point line and 77.3 percent (17-for-22) from the charity stripe.
Sophomore Dana Henrichs (Fall Creek, Wis.) and Genke each finish with 19 points, while Genke added a game-high nine rebounds and six steals.
Lakeland returns to the court on Saturday, Feb. 18, as the Muskies travel to Milwaukee, Wis., to face the Milwaukee School of Engineering in a NAC challenge game. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m.
