MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Lakeland College softball team ended its 2012 campaign in an 11-3 loss to No. 6 seed Dominican University in game seven of the Northern Athletics Conference.
The Muskies end the season 20-19, 14-10 in the NAC.
Dominican's Sarah Budz hit a solo home run to get the game started and give the Stars a 1-0 lead, but the Muskies quickly responded as they powered in three runs. With the bases loaded, junior Jenny LaLuzerne was walked to bring in sophomore Sammy Rieder, while sophomore Chelsea Gile hit a double to drive in junior Heather Haeflinger and senior Leah Sheahan.
The Stars regained the lead with three straight doubles to go up 4-3 in the third inning. Amy Paolini hit a three run home run to extend their lead to three in the fourth. Dominican powered in another four runs to take the eventual 11-3 lead.
Lakeland's bats went quiet after answering the Stars in the first inning and couldn't find the right mix as it left nine on base. Rieder led Lakeland at plate going 3-for-4, while Haeflinger ended 2-for-4.
"We got behind in the counts," said head coach Chad Buchmann. "We reached too much and fell behind and put ourselves in a hole. Overall, it was a great season for us. We were picked to finish lower than we did and we beat the No. 3 seed."
Lakeland generated 10 hits to Dominican's 12, but struck out 13 times.
Junior pitcher Erin Henk ends a solid season with a 15-12 record and 70 strikeouts.
Dominican advances in the NAC Tournament tomorrow to take on the loser between No. 1 Benedictine University and No. 2 Aurora University at 11 a.m.
