Schwarz has career day to carry Muskies past Lions

Junior Jake Schwarz scored a career-high 42 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to help lead the Lakeland College men's basketball team to a 113-90 win over Finlandia University Wednesday night in Woltzen Gym.

Schwarz (Sheboygan) scored 25 of his career-high 42 points in the first half on 9-for-12 shooting and helped the Muskies (8-3, 3-1 NAC) keep the lead during an intense first half of play.

The hot-shooting Muskies shot 60.6 percent from the field in the first half to go up by as many as 17 points, but the Lions didn't go unnoticed as they battled back to tie the game at 51 with 2:49 left in the half. Schwarz scored eight-straight points to give Lakeland a four-point, 57-53 lead heading into the locker room.

Lakeland carried its momentum into the second half and extended its lead to 26 points late in the game. Defensively, the Muskies held Finlandia to 28.2 percent shooting in the second half, including 16.7 percent from the 3-point arc. For the game, the Lions hit 16-of-55 3-point attempts and committed 14 turnovers.

Sophomore Justin Ward (Wisconsin Dells) posted another solid performance with 22 points and eight rebounds. Senior Jack Ridgway (Sioux Falls) chipped in with 11 points, while senior Josh Regal (Suring) dished out 10 assists and nine points.

Lakeland shot 54.5 percent from 3 for the game, including 50.7 percent from the floor.

Lakeland returns to Northern Athletics Conference action on Saturday as they hit the road to take on Rockford College. The Regents currently sit it first place in the NAC South Division and will look to avenge an 85-76 loss from the Muskies last season. Tip is 4:15 p.m. in Rockford, Ill.
