Muskies of the Week: Jeremy Hardy and Justin Groeneveld

Athletics - posted on 10/4/2011

Seniors Jeremy Hardy and Justin Groeneveld have been named the college's Muskies of the Week for their performances in Northern Athletics Conference play last week. Read about their performances below.

Jeremy Hardy

Senior Jeremy Hardy has added scoring hat tricks to his impressive soccer resume.

The Cooks, Mich., native recorded his second hat trick of the season against Concordia University Chicago and helped lift the Muskies to a 6-2 Northern Athletics Conference victory on Oct. 1. He is the third Muskie to register two hat tricks in a career.

The 6-foot-2 forward leads the NAC in goals (eight) and is tied for third in points (16). Hardy increased his career goal tally to 18 and added his name to Lakeland's record book. He was nominated for NAC Player of the Week for the second time this season and hopes to lead the Muskies to the NAC Tournament on Oct. 30.

"He is obviously a scoring threat for us and is a big target," said head coach Tony Pierce. "He's a steady player that is always good to have on the field. He brings more than just scoring to the game in that he works hard and he's a leader. We're happy to have him on our side."

Aside from playing soccer, Hardy serves as a resident assistant for the college.

Hardy is majoring in resort management and minoring in international business.

Justin Groeneveld

Senior Justin Groeneveld has become the Muskies deep threat this season and was a big part of the team's success on offense last week.

The Kingsford, Mich., native had a break-out game on Saturday as he led the Muskies with six receptions for 127 yards and two touchdowns. After being hampered by a leg injury early in the season, Groeneveld has come on strong, amassing nine catches for 188 yards in his last two games.

The 6-foot-4 wide receiver is a transfer who had struggled in the first two weeks, but seems to be gaining confidence in the new system. He and quarterback Dylan Van Straten seem to have good chemistry and will look to build on their success.

Groeneveld is majoring in Elementary Education
