The Lakeland College men's volleyball tied for second in Group C at the MIVA Championships on Saturday, going 3-1.
The Muskies (15-13) showed how great they can play, however, inconsistencies plagued them all day.
Lakeland couldn't finish in their first match of the tournament, falling 1-2 (25-22, 22-25, 12-15) to Ohio State University. In the loss, sophomore Brett Kaczmareck (Kenosha, Wis.) led the team with 11 kills, while sophomore middle hitter Ralph Kokoszka (Palos Heights, Ill.) added six kills. Freshman setter Dayton Erickson (Trevor, Wis.) finished with 25 assists.
In their second match of the day, following a four hour break, Lakeland swept Central Michigan 2-0 (25-12, 25-16. In the victory Kaczmareck was big again, tallying seven kills, while senior Beau Bradshaw (Oak Lawn, Ill.) added six kills.
The Muskies continued their solid play in a 2-1 (18-25, 25-19, 15-11) victory over Purdue. Kaczmarek and Bradshaw each tallied eight kills, with Bradshaw also adding three blocks. Senior Andy Cheever (Greenfield, Wis.) had a team-high seven defensive digs.
In their final pool play match, the Muskies defeated Iowa University in three sets, 2-1 (17-25, 28-26, 15-13). Kaczmarek and freshman Alec Redlich (Wauwatosa, Wis.) each totaled 11 kills with Erickson handing out 34 assists.
"The tournament is a roller coaster of emotion for us," said Lakeland head coach Joe Julkowski. "We've had a lot of highs and lows. We are still struggling with consistency, especially when the opposition starts to play better. We tend to shy back and wait for them to make errors and we need to do more to earn all of our points. Our middle connection was off and on throughout the tournament. When Dayton and all of our hitters are connecting, we are a tough team to beat."
Lakeland resumes play at the MIVA Championships at 8 a.m. on Sunday, March 25, as the Muskies face Adrian College in the first round of the Gold bracket.
