This week, the Lakeland College baseball team looks to break out of its slump with a nonconference contest mid-week before continuing Northern Athletics Conference play over the weekend.
The Muskies (16-16, 6-10 NAC) begin the week at home with a nonconference contest against Carthage College at 3 p.m. Lakeland returns to NAC play on Saturday with a trip to Benedictine University before welcoming the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Sunday.
The Muskies went 0-5 last week, including a 0-4 mark in conference play. Lakeland started the week with a 12-2 non-conference loss to host St. Norbert College. In NAC play, the Muskies were swept by Rockford on Saturday, losing 3-0 and 2-0, before falling twice to Dominican, 7-3 and 11-5.
Mike Ruzek was the offensive leader for the Muskies, hitting .368 (7-for-19) in five games, knocking in two runs and scoring once. He had a team-high .429 on-base percentage and slugged .368. Lakeland scored just 10 runs on the week, their lowest offensive output of the season.
Lakeland got four solid pitching performances, but the offense and defense didn't pull its weight. No pitcher went less than six innings or allowed more than three earned runs. Garrett Morris and Mike Ruzek both had solid outings, going eight innings each, with 14 combined strikeouts and seven runs, five earned, with 13 combined hits allowed.
