Muskies of the Week: Sammy Rieder and Vashia Gordon

Sophomore Sammy Rieder and junior Vashia Gordon have been named Lakeland College's Muskies of the Week for their performances in action last week. Read about their success below.

Sammy Rieder

Sophomore Sammy Rieder garnered Muskie of the Week honors after leading the Lakeland College softball team at the 2012 Northern Athletics Conference Tournament.

Rieder led the Muskies at the plate with a .636 batting average and a .818 slugging percentage as the team finished the season with a 20-19 overall record, 14-10 in the NAC.

The New Holstein, Wis., native was 7-for-11, including two doubles and three runs in Lakeland's three games at the tournament. Rieder started the Muskies' rally in a 7-4 win over No. 3 seed Concordia University Wisconsin when she singled and was walked in by junior Erin Henk in the seventh inning.

The 5-foot-7 shortstop finished the season as the team's leader in batting average (.398), slugging percentage (.610), hits (49) and total bases (75). She powered three home runs, five triples and seven doubles and recorded 11 stolen bases.

Rieder is majoring in criminal justice and is minoring in psychology and political science.

Q. You led the team in batting average and slugging percentage. What can you attribute to your success this season?
A: I saw the ball well and listened to our team mechanics.

Q: Who influences your game the most?
A:  My dad because he has always been there to support me and got me into softball.

Q: What do you most need to work on?
A:  My confidence.

Q: If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
A:  I want to tour all the MLB stadiums in America.

 
Vashia Gordon

Junior Vashia Gordon garnered Muskie of the Week honors after turning in a solid performance at the Northern Athletics Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday.

Gordon had her best performance of the year, winning the women's high jump with a new NAC Championship record height of 1.53 meters.

The Green Bay, Wis., native scored 10 of the women's 13 points. This comes on the heels of an impressive performance at the Wisconsin Private College Championships in which she scored seven points, taking eighth in the 200 meter dash and third in the high jump with a NAC record height of 1.53 meters.

Gordon is majoring in education and minoring in mathematics.

Q: With so much success as a junior, what goals do you set for next season?
A: The main goal I have for next season is to approach practices with a goal in mind to help better myself each and every day.

Q: You have finished the season strong, setting two Conference records, what has made you so successful?
A: I would not have made it this far without God and the support of my family. They helped me to believe in myself and pushed me when I wanted to give up.

Q: What area do you need to work on the most?
A: I need to get stronger and improve my technique in the events I participate in.

Q: If you could run anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
A: Tennessee so that I can meet the greatest basketball coach, Pat Summitt.
