Lakeland stays hot, closes regular season with sweep of Rockford

ROCKFORD, ILL. - Katie Freitag (Jr.-Kiel, Wis.), Anna Faust (Jr.-Cross Plains, Wis.) and Taylor Daus (Sr.-Green Bay, Wis.) all registered double digit kill totals and the Lakeland College women's volleyball team closed out the regular season with a three-set sweep of Rockford (Ill.) College Saturday night in a Northern Athletics Conference match.

Lakeland defeated Rockford by scores of 25-22, 25-18 and 25-12. The Muskies won their third straight and close out the regular season with a 17-9 overall record and a 7-5 mark in the NAC, while Rockford dropped to 5-24 overall, 2-9 in conference.

Lakeland currently is in line for the fifth seed in the NAC Tournament and will clinch the fifth seed if Wisconsin Lutheran College loses to conference-leading Benedictine (Ill.) University on Tuesday. If WLC wins the Muskies then would receive the sixth seed in the tourney. Fifth also could come down to a three-way tie if Wisconsin Lutheran wins and Marian University can defeat Maranatha Baptist Bible College on Tuesday.

Lakeland posted a sterling .333 attack percentage for the match, with 46 kills and just 11 errors in 105 attempts. Freitag led the way with 15 kills and a .464 attack percentage, while Faust posted 11 kills and Daus added 10.

Brittany Reindl (Jr.-Kenosha, Wis.) had 39 assists and Tess Myklebust (Jr.-Wisconsin Dells, Wis.) led the team with 18 digs. Lakeland received its toughest challenge in the first set, outlasting the Regents by just three points before winning by comfortable margins in the final two sets.

Laina Scheri led the Regents with 14 kills. Rockford was coming off a three-set sweep upset of Marian on Friday night for just its second conference win of the season.

Lakeland will open play in the NAC Tournament quarterfinals on Tuesday, Oct. 30 against an opponent to be announced. The Muskies can finish no higher than fifth in the final standings and therefore will be on the road for the quarterfinal.
