HARTFORD, WIS. - The Lakeland College men's golf team finished eighth of 10 teams competing at the Wisconsin Lutheran College Invitational which concluded Monday at the Washington County Golf Course.
The Muskies shot team rounds of 332 and 330 for a total score of 662. Carthage College won the meet with a score of 614, with Marian University four shots behind second with a 618 and Wisconsin Lutheran placing third with a score of 634.
Lakeland's top three finishers were tightly bunched, separated at the end by just one stroke. Beau Gundersen (So.-New Berlin, Wis.) tied for 29th individually with round of 84 and 80 for a score of 164. Tyler Kubicek (Jr.-Madison, Wis.) and Matt Lewellyn (Fr.-Oshkosh, Wis.) were one stroke behind, tying for 31st with a score of 165. Kubicek shot rounds of 80 and 85, while Lewellyn was consistent in carding rounds of 82 and 83.
Ryan Newburry (So.-Campbellsport, Wis.) was not far behind, tying for 35th with a total of 168 that included rounds of 86 and 82. The fifth golfer on the Muskies team was Andy Schneider (So.-Franklin, Wis.), who fired rounds of 87 and 92 to place 58th with a score of 179.
Lakeland also entered a pair of individuals in the tournament, and Casey Wusterbarth (Jr.-Oconto, Wis.) placed 60th with a score of 187 including rounds of 91 and 96. Zach Mutsch (Sr.-Howards Grove, Wis.) also competed on Sunday and shot a round of 85 before withdrawing on Monday.
Sean Esenberg of Wisconsin Lutheran won medalist honors and was the lone player to finish under par, posting rounds of 71 and 72 to finish at one-under par 143. Donnie Langland of Carthage was the only other player to shoot a round under par, firing a one-under 71 on Sunday before closing with a 76 on Monday to finish second overall with a score of three-over 147.
The Muskies now take a break until Monday, Oct. 8 when they compete in the Cress Creek Collegiate Invite at the Cress Creek Country Club in Naperville, Ill.
