While homecoming is a time for getting together with old friends and reminiscing about the good times at Lakeland, we also take time to celebrate the achievements of our alums, faculty, staff and friends of the college. Join us this year as we honor the following people:

2014 Alumni Awards

Dave Aldag ’83
Category: Service to the College

Dave, a long-time supporter of Lakeland College and a past Lakeland College Alumni Association Board president, competed as a dancer in the 2009 Movers & Shakers Gala and was an active member of the college's Sesquicentennial planning committee. He also presented at Alumni College and has been a long-time participant in the Blasters golf tournament.

Carroll & Marilyn Olm ’46 ’47
Category: Service to the College

Carroll and Marilyn (known to many as Olmie & Blondie) are longtime friends of the college. For years, Olmie wrote "The Echo," an entertaining, informative emailed newsletter that was popular with alumni from the 1940s, '50s and '60s. Devoutly religious, Olmie, a retired UCC minister, has dedicated his life to the church. Olmie is a Hall of Fame member who competed in football, basketball, track and tennis, earning the 1945 and '46 Student-Athlete of the Year awards.

José L. Araujo ’05 MBA ’09
Outstanding Recent Alumni

José served for five years as the program director at Partners for Community Development in Sheboygan before accepting the opportunity to become the associate director of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Wisconsin. He has remained active with the college by participating in focus groups and career development programming. José received the Top Young Professional Award of Sheboygan County in 2013.

Kathleen Rath Marr ’76
The President's Richard C. Preuhs ’65 Award

Kathy, who has taught at Lakeland College for 27 years, grew up on campus while her father taught and led the natural science division. Kathy, a professor of biology and past winner of the Underkofler Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching award, wrote "Into the Grether Woods," which details the ecology around campus. She has given tours of the woods to alumni during Homecoming weekend, has taught at a number of Alumni College events and is dedicated to her students and her alma mater.

Carol & Keith Striggow
Honorary Alumni Award

Keith and Carol have been pillars of the Lakeland family for more than 30 years. Earlier this year, they established the Keith and Carol Striggow Fund for Research and Learning, an initiative that provides faculty with opportunities to participate in a teaching and learning academy and offers financial assistance to exceptional students so they can participate in educational opportunities outside the classroom. Keith was named faculty emeritus when he retired in 2005 after 32 years of service to Lakeland. From 1993-96 he served as provost, and was acting president for one term in 1995. He was the college's chief academic officer for 12 years, was dean of students for two years and chaired three different academic divisions. He is regarded as one of the finest teachers in the college's history, having won the Student Government Teacher of the Year Award twice, the Underkofler Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award and the Alumni Association Outstanding Faculty Award.

Daniel J. Verbanac ’98
Professional Achievement Award

Daniel, president of WPS Energy Services in Green Bay, graduated from Lakeland's Green Bay Center with a degree in computer science. In the mid-1990s, Daniel helped Integrys Energy Services become one of the leading natural gas and electricity suppliers in the U.S. and Canada. In 2009, he was charged with leading the newly restructured Inetegrys after serving as director of trading operations, vice president, senior vice president and chief operating officer. Dan is also a 2002 graduate of the Harvard Business School's Advanced Management Program.

Hall of Fame Inductees

Leslie (Jerks) Laster ’98 - Leslie was a two-sport standout, earning first-team all-conference honors in volleyball and basketball her senior season. She earned all-conference recognition six times as a Lakeland athlete.

Dominic Schanen ’99 - Dominic was a two-time NCAA Division III national wrestling tournament qualifier and a two-time NCAA Academic All-American. He holds the single-season school record for wrestling wins with 41 in 1997-98. He was also a two-time conference cross country champion.

Cory Nickel ’04 - Cory finished ninth on Lakeland's all-time basketball scoring list, sixth in career assists, fourth in career steals and sixth in career 3-point field goals. He was the Lake Michigan Conference Player of the Year in 2003-04 and helped lead that team to Lakeland's only NCAA Tournament berth. The three-time first-team all-conference player was named conference Rookie of the Year as a freshman.

Jane Bouche - Jane joined Lakeland's athletic staff in 1989, and in five seasons as head women's basketball coach and eight seasons as head softball coach, she helped those programs become among the best in the region. She is tied for the most career softball wins in school history.
