TulipOldMainThe Rev. David Michael, a 1963 Lakeland graduate and one of the longest serving trustees in the college's history, passed away on June 7. He was 73.

He joined the board of trustees in 1972 as a youth member and served on the board for 43 consecutive years. Of the approximately 300 people who have served as the institution's trustees since 1867 (when the college's records begin), he is the second longest serving trustee behind Bob Melzer, who has served for 44 years.

Michael loved the college and faithfully served Lakeland as a leader, ambassador, friend and donor. "Lakeland's greatest strength, in my judgment, is its concern for the whole student as a whole person," he once wrote. "Its size permits the kind of interchange and relationships between students and faculty which is essential for quality education."

At the time of his passing he was serving on the board's Academic Programming & Innovation committee and the Trusteeship & Human Capital committee. He formerly served as a vice president on the board's Executive Committee and chair of the Academic & Student Affairs committee and the Trusteeship and Human Capital committee. He was a member of two presidential search committees.

He also served on the committee that created the aspirational document "Decade 2000" and served on the committee that created the vision document "Lakeland College 2020," both of which created visions for moving the college forward.

A longtime pastor in the United Church of Christ, Michael was a member of the planning committee of the Mission House Center, he was part of the group that helped create the master of arts in theology graduate degree and he led the college's baccalaureate service in 1998.
