Safe in the Lake Training - Part 2

Safe in the Lake is a program created by the Ulrich Center for Faith, Ethics, and Justice to train and equip Lakeland community members to be active and compassionate allies to members of the LGBTQ+ community. The program is designed to align with Lakeland’s mission of fostering an emotionally and physically safe community by helping to create a network of community members who promote education, awareness, and acceptance and who provide confidential support for Lakeland community members of all sexual orientations and gender expressions.

After participating in the Safe in the Lake workshop, which includes two 1.5 hour sessions, participants will

  • Be able to define key terminology pertaining to the LGBTQ+ community.
  • Begin to explore power, privilege, and oppression (specifically cisgender and heterosexual privilege) as it relates to gender and sexuality.
  • Know how to respond effectively to situations that an ally may encounter, such as
    • Someone coming out to you
    • Someone reporting an incident of bias or harassment
    • Someone expressing discomfort, concern, or negative judgment toward LGBTQ+ identity or culture
  • Be able to identify resources available to LGBTQ+ community members at Lakeland University

Why?

Research suggests that a reduction in discrimination towards any group provides a decrease in discrimination towards other groups as well; thus, everyone benefits. Students, faculty, and staff at Lakeland who identify as LGBTQ+ may not always feel safe about disclosing their sexual identity due to potential negative reactions or consequences. This may lead to feelings of isolation or invisibility and experiences of campus life as hostile, uninviting, and/or un-accepting. Safe in the Lake provides an avenue for LGBTQ+ individuals to be able to identify places and people who are supportive, non-judgmental, and welcoming of open dialogues regarding these issues.

The completion of the two-part training comes with a certificate and a sticker, to be hung or displayed in an office or place of work, that indicates the holder is committed to being an active ally.

We will offer Safe in the Lake workshops in the fall and in the spring.
