Christine Krause was working full time at a bank, tackling eight or nine credit hours a semester through Lakeland’s Milwaukee Center and singing in a band on weekends to supplement her income.

“That meant rehearsals during the week, too,” she says. “Looking back now, I have no idea how I did it.”

She did it, alright, graduating magna cum laude from Lakeland in 1991 with degrees in business administration and accounting, then co-founding what is now one of Wisconsin’s most successful small companies.

Krause, the CFO and treasurer of Fi-Med Management Inc., will be honored by Lakeland College for Professional Achievement at 5 p.m. on Sept. 26 during the Alumni Awards Reception – part of the inaugural Big Fish Festival. It was 1993 when Krause, a Manitowoc native, was approached by Adrian Velasquez, a customer at the bank. Velasquez was impressed with how Krause had explained some complex charges on his statement and asked if she’d like to go into business with him.

“He said, ‘I have this opportunity if you’re interested,’” Krause recalls. “I said ‘Yes.’ What did I have to lose? If it didn’t work out, I could always jump back into the job market.”

Fi-Med Management Inc., which has clients and staff throughout the U.S., brings business intelligence to the healthcare community, improving clients’ revenue and reducing their compliance risk. The innovative company has won numerous awards and accolades.

In 2007, Krause, the vice president and chief operating officer, earned Wisconsin’s Small Business Administration’s Small Business Person of the Year award.

About her Lakeland experience, Krause says, “Obviously my accounting degree and business degree help me every day, but it was my classes outside of business such as literature and science that really helped me understand the world around me and how things fit together. The liberal arts education at Lakeland truly creates a well-rounded self.”
