Huberty CPAs, through its innovative Premier Student Program, continues to tap into Lakeland University’s accounting talent.

At least six current Huberty employees are Lakeland alumni, and two of them went through Huberty’s PSP. The firm has also awarded four Lakeland students (and Huberty PSP participants) internships.

Lakeland’s Alexia Janz recently accepted a paid internship offer by Huberty CPAs after making a strong impression during the PSP. She will begin in that role this December in Plymouth.

“The things we look for in our candidates are drive and culture fit, and those qualities quite often apply to Lakeland students,” said Nathan Volkomener, a shareholder at Huberty and 2006 Lakeland grad.

Initiated in 2014, the PSP is Huberty’s college recruitment program. It is designed to build relationships during a three-day event that includes a social gathering, community service initiatives and extensive interviews.

Huberty, a full-service accounting and financial advising firm, features six locations in Wisconsin.

Volkomener, from Plymouth, began his undergraduate college career at UW-Milwaukee, but transferred to Lakeland because he wanted more close-knit relationships. After graduating, he earned his master’s at Marquette.

“As an undergraduate student, I wanted more one-one-one interaction with my professors and smaller class sizes,” he said. “Lakeland was a great fit.”

Volkomener called Huberty’s PSP a “great growth opportunity” for Lakeland students. “Some students come back to the program year after year,” he said. “For us, it’s an outstanding relationship tool, a way to connect to students. We’ve had success bringing in students who just finished their freshman year, getting to know them, then inviting them back. When they come back, they’re ahead of many of their peers.”

Lakeland students who are interested in the PSP program should apply by early May. Contact Jess Lambrecht, LU director of career readiness and professional development, at 920-565-1043 (ext. 2506) or by email at .
