For Lakeland College junior Karen Hjelle, the Pi Kappa Gamma’s annual Mother-Daughter Luncheon is a special event. “It’s kind of like a mini-Mothers’ Day,” she says. “When you’re in college, you don’t usually dedicate as much time to your mom as she deserves. Charlie Krebs, Lakeland College associate professor of theatre and speech, has announced the cast for this spring’s production of Hairspray. Actress Deltoiya Goodman and pianist Byron Sean put on quite a show earlier this week, performing “Ain’t I a Woman!” at Lakeland’s Bradley Theatre. The spirited music theater work, a convocation in celebration of Black History Month, featured Goodman portraying four important black females who spanned the decades from the 1930s to the 1970s. Blowing snow made Carrye Jo Cony’s Monday commute from Sheboygan to Lakeland College a bit tricky. “But it was absolutely worth the drive,” she said enthusiastically. Cony, the volunteer coordinator for the Sheboygan Area Salvation Army, brought a big, empty van to campus. Minutes later, it was jam-packed with an estimated 300 clothing items and 50 toiletries.
