As a Lakeland College student, 2014 graduate Tyler Holman exceled in multiple disciplines of art. When Pablo Palacios and Josh Reynders graduate from Lakeland College in December, both will have computer science degrees and full-time positions at one of the fastest-growing, most successful companies in the Midwest. Lakeland’s recent “Virtual Party at the President’s House” was informative and educational, and dealt with extremely difficult subject matter. “It made me uncomfortable,” one male student said after watching the skits that were part of the program, prompting several other students to quietly nod their heads in agreement. Nearly 100 high school students converged on Lakeland College last weekend for Saturday’s successful season-opening high school debate competition. David Henning, Lakeland’s director of debate and forensics, said the visiting students liked Lakeland’s campus, and from the feedback he received, they had fun competing here. Two Lakeland College students visited nearby Plymouth High School earlier this week to begin working with Plymouth students on Japanese language skills. The Lakeland students, Japanese natives Koichi Kawada and Sean Fujino, will continue to serve as volunteer “conversation coaches.” Using Skype or FaceTime, they will work weekly with four Plymouth students from teacher Laura Koebel’s Facilitated World Language course.
