For the second time, a team from Monroe High School took top honors at Lakeland University’s Forensic Accounting Competition. This was LU’s sixth consecutive Forensic Fraud Competition, which annually welcomes high schools from around the state to analyze and find solutions for well-publicized financial-based fraud cases. This year’s field included 23 teams from 17 schools. Becker CPA Review sponsors the competition. For the third straight year, Lakeland Associate Professor of Biology Paul Pickhardt will make the kitchen his laboratory. Pickhardt, one of 24 “Men Who Cook,” will prepare a Senegalese mafe—a meal of lamb-shoulder braised in a rich groundnut sauce, topped with lemon-infused parsley that he will serve over a quinoa pilaf for about 300 guests at the popular Safe Harbor fundraiser.The event, set for Saturday, April 7, at Blue Harbor Resort, is open to the public. Chris Kletzien and Hope Cerney represented Lakeland University in the National Band Association-Wisconsin chapter’s 2018 Intercollegiate Honor Band at the end of January. The organization annually offers an Intercollegiate Honor Band as part of its state convention. This fall, several members of the Lakeland band were nominated, including: Kletzien, Cerney, Melissa Landgraf, Dani Bossler, Malcolm Blakley, Mark Lawrence and Dylan Zastrow. When students in different courses work together to combine two distinct art forms into imaginative pieces, the final results can be spectacular. Recently, students from Monique Brickham’s digital illustration class and Jodie Mortag’s nonfiction writing class worked closely together and created really cool work. Brickham, LU’s assistant professor of art, and Mortag, LU assistant professor of composition, have collaborated in this fashion before, with great results.
