Lakeland University exercise science student Alyssa Stockero will pursue her Doctor of Chiropractic at Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. Lakeland University and Milwaukee Area Technical College have created a new partnership that will expand MATC's Promise program and provide a pathway to a bachelor's degree for economically disadvantaged students in the Milwaukee area who never thought that goal was possible. The MATC Promise was the first program of its kind in Wisconsin, providing free tuition for eligible students. Lakeland University will award degrees to just over 650 students on Saturday, May 11, at the institution's 157th commencement. A total of 658 students are eligible to graduate, including 456 undergraduates and 202 graduate students. A graduate student ceremony will be held at 10 a.m., undergraduates from the evening and online programs will graduate in a 1 p.m. ceremony and undergraduates from the traditional main campus program will graduate in a 4 p.m. ceremony. Lakeland Associate Professor of Biology Paul Pickhardt will travel to the tundra of Alaska in May and June as an invited scientist of the Smithsonian Institution's Migratory Bird Center. The group will study the Alaska bluethroat (Luscinia svecica), a small ground nesting thrush that breeds in Alaska and the Yukon but overwinters in Asia, which is unusual for migratory birds.
